Rio Communities is a city in Valencia County, New Mexico, United States. Prior to its incorporation on May 16, 2013, it was a census-designated place (CDP). The CDP population was 4,213 as of the 2000 census. Rio Communities is located at 34°38′31″N 106°43′37″W (34.641895, -106.727021). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.1 square miles (16 km2), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,213 people, 1,762 households, and 1,235 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 686.1 people per square mile (264.9/km²). There were 1,910 housing units at an average density of 311.0 per square mile (120.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.87% White, 3.13% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 11.30% from other races, and 3.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.05% of the population.
There were 1,762 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.86.
