Enderlin is a city in Cass and Ransom counties in the State of North Dakota. The population was 886 at the 2010 census.
Enderlin was founded in 1891. Local folklore suggests the name is derived from the semi-German “End der Line” (“end of the line”), as the city was briefly the terminus of the Soo Line Railroad’s main line through North Dakota. Another explanation is that the name was suggested by the wife of a Soo Line official and comes from a fictional character in a book. This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Enderlin has a humid continental climate, abbreviated “Dfb” on climate maps.
As of the census of 2010, there were 886 people, 386 households, and 225 families residing in the city. The population density was 615.3 inhabitants per square mile (237.6/km2). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 315.3 per square mile (121.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.6% White, 0.2% African American, 0.8% Native American, 0.1% Asian, and 0.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4% of the population. There were 386 households of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.7% were non-families. 38.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.81. The median age in the city was 48.5 years. 21.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.8% were from 25 to 44; 29.4% were from 45 to 64; and 25.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.2% male and 50.8% female.
